Prehistoric and early historic archaeology studies societies from written and non-written periods from the beginnings of human history to the early Middle Ages on the basis of their material legacies, which are obtained through excavations. In particular, this includes artifacts, soil structures, and ruins.
Provincial Roman Archaeology deals with finds and features in the Roman provinces and - like Prehistoric and Early Historic Archaeology - focuses on the study of everyday life as well as change and persistence of the population, with the spatial focus in both areas being on Switzerland and its wider geographical surroundings.
